New cycle parking facility on Drury Street
Check out our new cycle parking facility on Drury Street. I was delighted to lead the project which was officially opened on Thursday 8th October by Councillor Andrew Montague and Dublin City Council’s Cycling Unit. The facility offers indoor cycle parking to cyclists around shops, bars, restaurants and cafés, right in the heart of the city.

The cycle park is located on the ground floor of Drury Street Car Park. An entire floor of car parking spaces was removed to provide for cyclists. The facility is designed for short-term use so this means anyone from commuters, to tourists, to shoppers can use it.
What’s great about this new facility is that it’s indoors, the cycle parking area is under constant surveillance by CCTV and its completely free to the general public. I’d imagine it will also tie in quite nicely with the Dublin Bikes scheme in that people will be able to cycle into town, lock their bikes up in a secure indoor facility in the centre of the city and then use the dublinbikes to get around town. There are two stations close by, one around the corner on Exchequer Street and another one up towards St. Stephen’s Green on Chatham Street.

The City’s Cycling Officer, Ciarán Fallon says “It’s great for cyclists and it’s great for shops and local businesses. There used to be 16 car parking spaces in the cycle parking area, now there’s 192 spaces to park your bike. That’s 12 times as many shoppers only now is they’ll be arriving on 2 wheels instead of 4!”

- October 31, 2009 at 12:59 pmDelighted to see this facility in place. The Dublin Cycling Campaign has circulated its large membership with information on this facility.
Might be worth installing poster frames on walls that can be used to promote bicycle events – such as this year’s Bicycle Christmas Party (17th Dec).

- October 31, 2009 at 2:04 pmExcellent news – I cycle into town regularly and have accepted that my bike might not be there when I returned to it. I will certainly use this facility on a regular basis and will be confident that my bike will be still there. Many thanks to all who made it happen.

- November 7, 2009 at 5:52 pmHey guys I was in Drury Street today (a Saturday) @ 2pm and there were 4 bikes (plus me). The bike racks at the corner of Stephen’s Green 50m up the road were packed with bikes some racks with three bikes.
I can only think this is because people don’t know about it (I only found out by accident).
I’d hate to see this getting axed because of lack of use. Stickers on the existing bike racks would be a cheap way to start.

- November 15, 2009 at 2:03 pmHi Paschal,The problem with most People is they vote with their Feet whatever is nearest to them they will use. If it is for only a short period when someone is going into the St Stephens Green Shopping Centre for instance they will lash their Bike to a stand on the Green or Sth King Street especially if they have a load of Shopping that they do not want to carry far ,In spite of what Vincent Jackson is saying that Cyclists do not Buy anything. If on the other Hand it is all Day then this is a great Boon Drury Street.

- November 23, 2009 at 9:03 amCongratulations to all DCC staff involved in bringing this initiative to pass. Are there any plans to have a similar setup on the Northside, for example around Jervis Street? Some other car parks in the city seem to allow for free bike parking on a smaller scale, does anyone know if a list has been compiled? When I need to use a car I prefer to support these cycle friendly businesses first. Let’s hope we see more of this.

- November 28, 2009 at 11:52 pmGreat facility – wished we had something similar here in Galway – can you tell me Is this a City Council owned carpark or a privately owned one? i’m sure a private operator could make more money from a bike rack in a car space than they could from a car.

- December 1, 2009 at 11:53 am@Blanaid: Thanks, it’s a Dublin City Council owned car park which is operated on our behalf by a contractor. We don’t charge for the facility but I agree that a private operator could generate revenue doing so, particularly if they were able to offer storage lockers and changing facilities. This is quite common in the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany.

- January 4, 2010 at 5:53 pmT His is a great idea but I had never heard about it until I stumbled across it here. It needs to be promoted somehow, ie on the advertisements that JC deux out up, stickers at bike stands etc. great idea though, will be using in the future

- January 16, 2010 at 2:28 amI was in the City on Thursday Visiting Mr Midleton Garden Shop on Mary Street getting my Seed Potatoes and other Stuff for the New Growing Season. Then I decided to go up to Grafton Street and Browse around and decided to Check out Drury Street Carpark & Cyclepark. I think it is very good, nice and dry out of the Rain. It is great for all day Parking of your Bicycle There was 7 Bikes there and my own made 8. I think the Council should put up a few signs stating that there is Parking for Bikes with directions on how to get there in various nearby Streets. like saying around the Corner from Hairy Lemons Pub on Stephens Street or to the Rear of the Market on South Georges Street and 50 mtre up.

- March 22, 2010 at 2:26 pmExcellent facility, well done DCC. The location is perfect for the first of these facilities. However it really needs to be marketed more…i suspect awareness of the facitliy is very low – some ads round town maybe, signposts etc?

- April 6, 2010 at 4:22 pmIt’s open from 7.30am to 1.00am Monday to Saturday and 11.00am to 7.00pm on Sundays. Not sure if you can leave a bike overnight but I can’t see how it would be a problem.
They definitely need to publicise it more as there is always loads of space available. Fair play, though, for setting it up.

- April 7, 2010 at 11:44 amIt’d be great if they had lockers too – somewhere to dump the helmet & backpack…
Great facility, I hope its well used.

- April 22, 2010 at 10:23 pmSounds great, but agree with other comments – needs advertising, only just came across its existance on this site.

- April 30, 2010 at 12:18 amthis is fantastic- well done to all involved. i have been trying to decide if i can be bothered buying a replacement for my poor bike that was stolen last week but finding this has made my mind up. i have been whingeing about the apparent chronic lack of will to combat bike theft but this gives me cause for hope.

- June 4, 2010 at 5:01 pmI have noticed that many existing on street bike parking racks were removed to make way for the commercial Dublin Bike scheme.
There should be an on-street public bike space for every commercial dublin bike park space.
In all probability Drury St will start charging.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

- June 9, 2010 at 12:18 pm@Can C. Itcoming: Some bike stands were moved to provide space for Dublinbike stations because they need an electricity and broadband connection and one metre clearance to underground services. Bike stands on the other hand can be put in most places and where removed were relocated as near as possible. At the moment we are increasing the number of bike stands around the city – see public consultation on this site. There are no plans to charge for Drury Street bike park.

- June 22, 2010 at 1:12 amThis is a brilliant initiative, but as others have said it needs much more publicity. It’s not even well publicised on this site! I only found this note by accident while browsing around. I suggest putting a link on the home page of this web site and on as many other related web sites as you can find. And a few posters around the city centre too. Perhaps some journalists could be persuaded to write about it.
